There are new people to get to know, new procedures to learn and, naturally, you want to make a great first impression.

Whether it’s your first job or you’re swapping your old career for a new one in finance, there’s a lot to consider.

But don’t worry. Just follow these top tips and you’ll have that first job nailed in no time.

1.BE PREPARED:
First impressions matter, so it makes sense to be organised. Be punctual, both in person and on the phone. Be clear on what your role is and keep a diary so you don’t lose track of what you’re doing and when. If people know you’re reliable, they’ll trust you to deliver.

2.BE SEEN:
They say hard work is its own reward but if you’re too modest about your achievements, you may lose out. Accept praise graciously; don’t just shrug off what you’ve achieved. Own it. After all, you want a shot at the most interesting assignments and promotions. Remember, if you don’t push yourself forward, who will?

3. BE A TEAM PLAYER:
It’s good to stand out from the crowd but it’s vital to work in harmony with your colleagues. Give credit where it’s due and be open to feedback. Take advice, be supportive and you’ll get support back.

4. GET CONNECTED:
Build positive relationships with those around you and beyond. Network at events and conferences, be active on social media. Creating new contacts helps you get known and stand out from the crowd. Plus you’ll learn lots from people who have been there and done it already.

5. BE AVAILABLE:
Seek out extra opportunities. Ask to be involved with projects where you can work with other teams and across departments – just be careful not to end up with too much to do. Could you offer to take on a first aid role? Or be the office blogger? By showing a positive attitude and willingness to work hard, you’ll become the ‘go to’ person when something needs done.

6. MIND YOUR MANNERS:
Polished manners and respect for others are good traits to have in and out of work. Be discreet; keep your cool even in challenging situations. You’ll be seen as professional, trustworthy and earn the respect of others.

7. SPEAK UP:
Don’t shrink into the background at meetings. Read the agenda before the meeting, plan what to say and then get your voice heard. Let your personality shine through. Your contribution is important, so don’t be afraid to speak up.

8. BE THE BEST ‘YOU’:
Don’t stand still. Stay up to date with your profession by attending courses and reading publications. Get to know the skills required by your employer for different roles and seek out training opportunities. Don’t stop learning.
